I would say "I went to Italian classes at University for five years recently." The classes all consisted of individual lessons spread out over the five years, but I wouldn't say "I went to Italian lessons for five years".
As we've been saying, the teacher could also say that. The context would make clear which meaning was intended.

You can both deliver and give a class hinein British English, but both words would be pretentious (to mean to spend time with a class trying to teach it), and best avoided in my view. Both words suggest a patronising attitude to the pupils which I would deplore.
Actually, they keep using these two words just like this all the time. In one and the same Lyrics they use "at a lesson" and "hinein class" and my students are quite confused read more about it.
